You are your only competition

Hey there, fitfam! It's me again, eager to share and positively encourage you during this amazing fitness and wellness journey.

I trust that you will remain inspired, remain unapologetic about your journey, honest with your efforts and true to yourself. After all, your only competition is you.

My journey didn't start like many. In fact, I've always been an active person.

Representing Bermuda in athletics, playing basketball, netball and volleyball in high school and after university are just some ways I've been and have since remained active.

What they all had in common though was my desire to feel stronger, perform better, live healthier and maintain high energy.

As I aged, I have to admit, the vanity and quest for physical transformation tried to take over. I'm happy to report this desire turned into a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

One key lesson I've learnt along the way is that your only competition is you. In track and field especially, you truly are the sole author and performer of your journey.

In today’s world of fitness and wellness, it's easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others, especially with social media where everyone's highlight reel is on display.

But let me tell you, the real magic happens when you focus on your own progress, both inside and out.

Standing in front of the mirror, reflecting on how far you've come, is a powerful practice.

It's not just about the physical changes (I know, vanity is real) but also the mental and emotional growth.

Look at your reflection, soak in all your success and celebrate every small victory, from completing that extra set of push-ups to mastering a challenging yoga pose, to acknowledging your progress in the kitchen.

These victories are the building blocks of your journey, helping propel you forward.

Staying laser-focused is another key to success. In athletics while lining up at the starting blocks or on the high jump runway, I couldn't afford to glance in either lane or look around.

I had to develop tunnel vision, visualising every step, stride, leap as I've practised.

With fitness and wellness, it helps to define your goals and create a road map to achieve them.

Whether you're aiming for weight loss, increased strength, or enhanced flexibility, having a clear vision will keep you motivated and on track.

Remember, it's not about perfection; it's about progress. Embrace the process, and trust that every step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.

Surround yourself with a supportive community. In all sports you have a team, a community that help and encourage, knowing the hard work and sacrifice you've put in.

Find yourself that community, a workout buddy, a fitness class, or an online community that can be that added encouragement and inspiration especially when tough days occur.

Most importantly, listen to your body. Fitness is a lifelong journey, and it's crucial to prioritise your overall wellbeing.

Rest when you need to, nourish your body with wholesome foods, and find joy in the activities that make you feel alive.

In the end, your fitness and wellness journey is uniquely yours. Embrace it, savour the victories, and learn from the challenges. Remember that you are your greatest competition – so go out there, crush your goals, and become the best version of yourself!

Happy Wednesday, Fitfam!
