Back to School - back to you!
If you've been following my articles for a while, you might do quick math and realise that those little chocolate babies are now 5 years old. Five!
With that I can nervously smile and announce that they are ready for big school - primary school. Are we ready? We have no choice, right?
With this back-to-school season I am imaging zippers zipping, lunchboxes snapping shut, and other parents island-wide letting out a collective sigh of relief… and maybe a little panic (or just me with the panic?)
As much as I love the chocolate babies, the whirlwind of getting them into their new big school routine will likely feel like a full-time job in itself. Between homework, extracurricular activities, and after-school programmes, finding time for my own wellness and fitness can seem like a distant dream. It doesn't have to end there though.
While life with children is indeed a challenge, it’s also a journey well worth it.
Here's my note and advice to you this 2024-2025 school year.
The school year brings a whole new set of schedules, responsibilities and a bit of stress. Suddenly, you’re a taxi service, a homework helper, a snack provider, and a sideline cheerleader all rolled into one. It’s easy to get so caught up in your children's’ activities that your own needs slip to the bottom of the to-do list.
But here’s the thing: finding a fitness routine that works for you isn’t just a “nice to have” – it’s essential. Staying active helps manage stress, boosts your mood, and gives you the energy you need to keep up with your busy life. The key is finding a routine that fits into your new schedule, not the other way around.
First things first: be kind to yourself. You might not be hitting the gym for an hour every day, but that doesn’t mean you’re not getting a workout. Here are some ideas for sneaking in fitness without turning your schedule upside down:
The 15-minute miracle: A 15-minute walk after dropping the kids off at school, a quick yoga session while they’re at football training, or a mini strength workout before bed can do wonders. Remember, something is always better than nothing.
Playtime is exercise time: Children have boundless energy, so why not tap into that? Join them in a game of hide and seek, kick a ball around, or challenge them to a dance-off. You’ll get a workout, and make memories.
Buddy up: If you’ve got a friend or neighbour in the same boat, consider teaming up. You can take turns watching each other’s children while the other gets in a workout, or go for a brisk walk together while the children are at an after-school activity.
Embrace the early (or late) hours: Sometimes, the only quiet moments are before the sun rises or after the children are in bed. These can be the perfect times for a quick workout, a calming stretch, or even just some peaceful meditation. It’s your time, and it can set the tone for the rest of the day.
Back-to-school season is all about schedules, but don’t forget to schedule time for you. Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a coffee with a friend, or just a few moments to breathe, these small acts of self-care are just as important as any workout.
Life with children is a constant adventure – sometimes exhausting, often chaotic, but always filled with love and joy. Remember, it’s not about finding perfection in your routine; it’s about finding moments of happiness and connection.
Give yourself permission to be flexible, to try new things, and to be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. Fitness isn’t just about hitting the gym; it’s about moving your body, enjoying your time with family and friends, and taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing.
So, whether you’re squeezing in a quick workout between drop-offs or finding joy in a spontaneous game of backyard cricket, know that you’re doing an amazing job. The back-to-school season might be hectic, but it’s also an opportunity to rediscover your own strength, resilience, and the importance of pouring back into yourself.
After all, you’re not just getting your children ready for school – you’re setting the stage for a healthy, happy, and fulfilling year for the whole family.
Happy Wednesday fitfam. As usual, remain unapologetic about your entire fitness and wellness journey, stay true to yourself and always be honest with your efforts.
Wish me luck, love and blessings this 2024-2025 school season.
